A duck decoy has been used for thousands of years throughout the world to draw a duck in the area, giving hunters the chance of a trophy or two. In recent years, though, old duck decoys have become a collector's item is valuable. While there are many replicas in the market, it is important to be able to tell the difference between authentic and replica.
The Smithsonian Institution is home to the largest number of duck decoys in North America, with most of those found in a cave in Arizona. The traditional, hand-carved, wooden decoy was made mostly of the 10th century to the mid-twentieth century. The lure of duck vintage is a collectors item suitable for the duck hunter, and are considered beautiful works of art and used for decorative purposes in homes in many countries. Many are found in antique shops and collectibles stores. Some duck decoys vintage sought after by collectors are:
• 1900 vintage duck hunting trap by Charles Birch of a wild duck.
• Around 1890 Harry Shourds goldeneye duck hunting vintage trap of Tuckerton, New Jersey area.
• Around 1875 vintage Dodge Drake Mallard duck hunting trap by JN Dodge.
• Walter circa 1925 Vintage juridique redhead duck decoy from Toronto, Canada.
• Around 1920 – 1930 Benjamin Schmidt Blackduck decoy large.
For those interested in collecting antique duck decoys, the collector must be tired of playing smart, and many are so good they are able to deceive collectors. Vintage lures have solid color patterns, while modern interpretations have real feathers for details. Many of the older decoys have the eyes of metal studs, or those that were carved and painted by hand; glass eyes are often used on lures later. Because vintage decoys were carved by hand using a rasp, drawknife, and hatchet, make sure search tool marks in the trap. In the mid 1850s, decoys were carved hollow comprises three separate sections. It is also used metal and silhouettes wood known as stick-ups and shadow decoys. Looking for the manufacturer's name on the weight of the keel is also a good indicator of a vintage lure. Moreover, after the Civil War, the decoy's tail and beak were carved and the body of cork. With these tips in mind a collector may be in finding the quality of the vintage duck decoys to start a collection.
