Soccer players are gifted athletes physical strength and agility that would put many other athletes to shame. The finely tuned, professional committed that we play in the final of the World Cup and in leagues around the world have access to the most advanced designs of soccer shoe to enhance performance. From the first pair of soccer shoes were produced by King Henry VIII in 1526, costing four shillings, this vital piece of equipment has become a player in billions dollars.
In the late 1800s, the heavier boot gradually became replaced by a shoe style lighter than the game went from hobby sport. In 1891, a revision of the Laws of the Game allows the projection on the soles of shoes for the first time. This pioneering initiative introduced tacos and saw the first incarnation of the modern-day soccer shoes. A half-kilo weight, this thick leather ankle boot does not offer the most flexibility but offered much-needed progression from steel-toe-capped work-boots.
The twentieth century saw a little progress and various soccer shoe manufacturers starting mass production including Gola, Valsport and Hummel. In Germany, industrious Dassler brothers introduced the interchangeable studs to give users the opportunity to adapt to different playing surfaces and conditions. This further developed in the 1950s when football shoes were equipped with metal screws or plastic plugs.
The Dassler brothers were to play an even greater role in the development of football shoes becomes his earlier work, he suggested. After a bitter dispute the two separated and went to form Adidas and Puma, now two of the leading names in soccer footwear. Shoes more lighter and more flexible, made primarily from kangaroo skin and are designed specifically to accommodate hard, firm and soft ground.
The Copa Mondial, launched by adidas in 1979 to become the best-selling soccer shoe design with its synonymous three-band and swing tongue. The Puma King continued to sell and other sportswear companies entered the market including Umbro, Lotto and Diadora. But more was yet to come.
In 1994, Adidas launched the highly anticipated, revolutionary adidas Predator. These football boots broke the mold, almost literally, with its' polymer extrusions and bladed studs. Designed by former Liverpool FC soccer player Craig Johnston, the adidas Predator football boot world by storm as it claimed to swerve and power with increased rubber molds on top of the boot. With player endorsements of such global stars as Zinedine Zidane, Gazza 'Paul' Gascoigne and David Beckham, the brand continues to develop and evolve the design with versions such as accuracy Predator (2000) and the Predator PowerSwerve (2007).
Nike was one of the last global super-brands to begin marketing its soccer shoes, but the company designs and player endorsements have forced Nike to the top of the ladder of football shoes. Nike Total 90, Mercurial are their best selling designs and have been advertised by players of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United and Wayne Rooney and Ronaldinho's Brazil international.
The new millennium also saw the introduction of several football shoes colors, with players often using designs that were coordinated with the color of your team uniform. Several new designs have also been launched as the pork Craig Johnston (patented Interactive Grip) and the Lotto Zero Gravity shoes without laces, but none to the impact of the predator. However, only a matter of time before a new style takes the world by storm, and soccer shoe Henry VIII ordered in 1526 becomes an even more distant memory.
