Bringing home a bit of Sanibel you will provide memories to last a lifetime!
My question to concentrate on the bombing written about Sanibel is everyone knows this. Sanibel is considered one of the top three places in the world to go bombing. Despite being third, the first two Islands Pacific and Africa are a bit remote for most visitors to Sanibel. This attracts Sanibel shell collectors across the country and as outside the country.
While there are many, many things that distinguish Sanibel Island as a resort vacation destination, it is undeniable that the quality of the bombings that distinguishes it.
It is also worth mentioning that many of the deposits of Sanibel are simply masterpieces. Fruitful day at the beach is not only fun, is a treasure hunt that can result in a wonderful find.
But first the treasure hunter must be prepared to take full advantage of the experience bombing and protect deposits found and collected.
The most important thing to remember is that deposits are not allowed to live in their collection shells. Because shells are important for the island chain of life, and because they are Sanibel and Captiva islands of refuge where life is considered valuable, the State of Florida has prohibited collecting shells living on the island. "Shell Live" is defined as any sample with an inhabitant, whether or not the mollusk seems alive. The law also protects the dollars sand, starfish and sea urchins. All shelling is prohibited in JN "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
Besides avoiding the collection live shells is better for the ecology of the island rather than attempting to remove the cubes from the shells of the beach. It is also better for you. Not only are the shells of an example your cup runneth over when I get home with plenty of shells and nowhere to keep them, collections of shells are best viewed as "less is more. In the words of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of famous aviator Charles Lindbergh, the shells of Sanibel and Captiva should be viewed as individual pieces: "One can not collect all the beautiful shells on the beach. It can be collected only a few, and are more beautiful if they are few. "
There are few places in the world where you can bring home this beauty of the holiday, and all free!
So with a warning and conservation philosophy in mind, here are the essential elements of the collection shell:
Be prepared. Bring a bucket, a net bag and a shovel, and lots of sunscreen and a hat if it's a hot sunny day (like most the day is in Sanibel!).
Shell preferably at low tide and after a storm to find the maximum number of shells and maximum variety.
Soak the shells in a 50/50 solution of bleach and water, a few hours or overnight. If any barnacles or other matter is left to eliminate a peak or a toothbrush. To clean the tanks shine with mineral oil or baby oil.
You can pick up sand dollars, but check first to make sure that the sand dollar is not alive – delivery – there is little centipede feet up and down the back – tap gently with your finger to see if they move and your life. If I live gently place again in the water and do not move, then you just found one of the treasures of the islands!
To whiten a dollar of white sand, it is important to soak clear. Soak in a 50/50 solution of bleach and water for 5-10 minutes. Do not soak too long in a bleach solution and sand dollar may collapse. Rinse well, dry in sun to bleach preferably more. To harden sand dollars for crafts or the screen: Mix equal parts white glue and water. With the brush cover with the mixture of sand dollars. Let dry.
As mentioned in a post long before the blog, Sanibel Island is famous for its great shelling. The phrase "Sanibel Stoop" refers to the many people you see every year more inclined to collect shells from the beach.
