As you might already know, the Hobo spider, Tegenaria Agrestis, is originally from Europe. I’ve heard it is a spider of medical importance, but over here, where it lives ‘in the wild’, we have no records of people having bitten by that kind of spider (the only ones of medical importance here are the yellow sac spider as well as the water spider). It has competition from other Tegenaria species not encountered in america, but still it is strange no one has been bitten. Same goes for the Buthus Occitanus in France (we don’t have any scorpions around here), where it is relatively harmless, and the same species encountered in the middle east appears to be lethal. Could location therefore be a factor in species behavior and/or poison/venom ?
Well you have to understand also that both of the species mentioned above are also non aggressive species. The only time when bites occur is when people inadvertently step on them or trap them between pieces of clothing. One factor in the frequency of bites is probably related to temperature, in the middle east where the temperatures are much higher than in Europe, these arthropods will search out shelter from the sun and heat. This leads them into peoples homes, and into articles of clothing, like boots for instance….this is where the majority of bites or stings occur.
If it is the same species, then it would most likely have the same level of toxicity, however….since venom in all arachnids is adapted firstly for subduing prey, the type of food in both regions may dictate the severity of their sting/bite. If these animals are feeding on insects or small vertebrates much smaller than themselves in Europe, then they may not need a very powerful venom to kill them. This could be one factor.
