Fulton Bag and Cotton Mills is a former factory operation complex is located in the Cabbagetown neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. The construction of the complex began in 1881 on the south coast railway line in Georgia, east of central Atlanta, the mill site in Atlanta. The site is now used as a mixed-income community of lofts, known as the stack on Boulevard.
Old story
The beginnings of the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mills can be attributed to Atlanta in 1868, when Jacob Alsace, a German Jewish immigrant who had just arrived in Atlanta, Cincinnati, began working in the city on canvas, paper, and hide business. Alsace quickly recognized the need for business and other areas of web and paper containers to house their goods. In two or three years, Alsace has changed for the new company manufacturing fabrics and paper bags and joined forces with fellow German Jewish immigrant Isaac May. In January 1872, the new company took the name of Alsace, May and Company. Located in the old market house slaves in Atlanta, the company expanded during the 1870s, at the end of the decade, society consisted of an impression Bleachery, and the mill bag, and employed between 100 and 160 workers, including women and children.
Construction on the current site
After receiving financial support from Cincinnati banker Lewis Seasongood, the company began construction of a new complex buildings on the south side of the line of railroad in Georgia, east of the city. In 1881 the company became known as the Society Fulton spinning cotton, adding a bag factory for the new site in 1882. In the late 1880s the association between Isaac and Jacob May Alsace had been interrupted. Part of the company became Alsace, Mai Paper Company, and the other, led by Jacob Alsace and incorporated in 1889, is became the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill Company.
In recent years, had exceeded the capacity of existing buildings, giving more housing for factory workers has been well established by the turn of the twentieth century. Bag plant in New Orleans and St. Louis were bought during the decade 1890, and factories in New York and Dallas began operations in early twentieth century. Other facilities in Minneapolis and Kansas City were established during and after World War II, and a plant in Denver was added in 1945 at the end of the Second World War. The plant expansion Atlanta has also continued throughout the warehouses first half of the twentieth century: the office, two buildings selector, and several have been built during these years, and the Clinic of Alsace and Jacob nursery was created in the 1940s.
Strikes
Though prosperity at the beginning of the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mills, the company was worried about the periods of unrest. A wage dispute resulted in a two-day strike in November 1885. A brief second strike occurred in August 1897, when white workers protested the hiring black women. The 1897 strike was settled after five days. A longer strike took place in 1914-1915, caused by the disapproval of management increase efforts among employees to adhere to textile workers in the United States. Besides the issue of unionization, the strikers demanded an increase wages of a working week of 54 hours, and decreased use of child labor. The strike gained national notoriety when he drew the attention of the United States newly formed Commission on Industrial Relations, which sent representatives to Atlanta to take testimony in March 1915. The strike collapsed in May this year.
The family Alsace
