Fun with the Gospel of Bongo
The High Priest of Prickly Bog by Hiram Blunt, Editorial BongoVista
For those of us who prefer the predictable uncategorizable box, "The High Priest of Prickly Bog" is a pleasure. This gender-bender happy landing somewhere near of "speculative fiction", but its metafictional form and sending it spinning philosophical content in a literary direction.
For one thing, "High Priest … "is a comic romp through the lives of two men and a woman, a struggling writer with a manuscript, a problem in yourself, and some other friends rather unsavory, a leap of time, the angel chosen, investors become prophet who suffers in the glare of celebrity religious and pragmatic country girl unwittingly falls in love with the real man behind the media image. In another, much larger, level, is a treaty to heal the spiritual malaise of our time.
The book opens with a touch of freewheel metaphysics: the story of the creation of the world by the Great God Bongo. After paving the way with a jump of a distant past for the future: "the very land Bongovia family, where the church has ruler" literalized "the original gospel of free thought Bongo in a religion imposed by the state of compliance. We are in a surprising sweep convoluted journey through the mysteries of time travel, the vicissitudes of fame the plight of the writer's life, the elusive nature of angels and friends, and more. In the end, we realize we are witnessing the dawn of a revolution in Bongovia.
"What am I?" congregation singing somewhere near half of the story, and the High Priest of the Intergalactic Temple of the Great God Bongo answers: "You are what you are … what I've always been … always will be." Hiram Blunt, the apparent author of "High Priest …," Clearly enjoys swimming in the deep waters of esoteric thought age. And despite its tongue in cheek, which has some powerful words of wisdom to impart. Maybe that's to be expected from an author who dictated his novel from beyond the grave (a surprising statement made on the back cover channeler and typist, "" Mario Vickram Sen).
For the most part, however, maintains Blunt heady spiritual currents where they belong, buried beneath the surface. Plot, characters, and voice pull us very easily. One of the pleasures of fiction is the voice that rare talented author takes a character to tell his story. Here, Blunt has a natural gift for language that sounds like your partner to read with confidence trickster or turn a "what-if" yarns, stirring in a little word game, a dash of sly wit, absurd action, a dash of consciously purple prose, a strong support of social parody incisive and a bold hypothesis of the truth of his own liberal philosophy.
Also the company, the narrative tricks to keep good book. Like Paul Auster Oracle Night "and Leviathan," "The High Priest of Prickly Swamp" has the same title as the novel written by one of his characters. To the Like "Milan Kundera The Book of Laughter and Forgetting", occasionally inserting a first person narrative "I", without explanation, a third-person omniscient point of view, and frankly acknowledges his story and characters as creations of fiction. Like "Life of Pi by Yann Martel" is a key high whopper of a story of adventure, constantly supported by the universal reach of God.
"The High Priest of Prickly Bog" is a reading very entertaining, intelligent and entertaining, but more than that – the type of entertainment that works on several levels at once, to make you both laugh and think. In its last page, he is delighted to discover that … hey, maybe there will be a sequel!
