Dorothy Gibson (May 17, 1889 February 17, 1946) was an American pioneer of silent film actress, model and singer artist active in the 20th century. She is best known as a survivor of the sinking of the Titanic.
Biography
Life and career
The daughter of John A. Brown and Pauline Boesen, Gibson was born Dorothy Winifred Brown in Hoboken, New Jersey. His father died when she was three and his mother remarried John Leonard Gibson. Between 1906 and 1911, she appeared on stage as a singer and dancer in a series of theatrical productions and vaudeville, the largest in the Broadway musical Dairy of Charles Frohman (1907). Also a member of the choir has regularly been in the shows produced by the Shubert brothers, the Hippodrome Theater.

In 1909, the year before marrying George Battier, Jr., Gibson began to ask to the famous commercial artist Harrison Fisher, becoming one of his favorite models. Her image appeared regularly on posters, cards best-selling magazines like Cosmopolitan, Ladies Home Journal and The Saturday Evening Post. Gibson has been widely disseminated during this period as "The Original Harrison Fisher Girl ".
Meanwhile, Gibson, separated from Battier, if the couple did not divorce until about 1916.
Film Career of
Represented by top theatrical agent Pat Casey Gibson entered films in early 1911, joining the Independent Motion Picture Company (IMP) and charges and later the Lubin studios as a player exchange. He was hired as the star of the new office of the United States Studios in Paris in July 1911 lair. She was an instant success with the public, becoming one of the top actresses in this new medium of film to be promoted as a "star" in their own name. Despite its popularity in comedies, one of the most important was that of Molly Pitcher in the historical drama, Hands Across the Sea (1911), Lightning debut vehicle and turn the first star. One of most famous role of Gibson screen was the sound itself on the Titanic (1912), based on its experience in the disaster of the legend. Saved from the Titanic, released a month after the sinking, was the first of many films about the event.

The Titanic is the best known aspect of the life of Gibson. After a period of six weeks holidays in Italy with her mother, she returned aboard the Titanic to make a new series of photos for opening at Fort Lee. Women had played bridge with friends in the room the night of the fatal ship collision with the iceberg. With two of his comrades escaped in the lifeboat launched. After arrival in New York on the rescue ship Carpathia, Gibson was persuaded by his manager to appear in a film based on the sinking. It not only acted in the theater reel but he wrote the screenplay. He also appeared in the same clothes he had brought aboard the Titanic with an evening gown of white silk covered with a jacket and a polo coat.
Although saved from the Titanic was a huge success in the United States, Great Britain and France, the only known print was destroyed by fire in 1914 in studies lair. The loss of this film is considered by film historians as one of the largest in the silent era. Other achievements of Gibson's film to start with the protagonist of one of the first feature films made in the USA (Hands Across the Sea, 1911), co-starring in the American play in the first series or a chapter (Revenge of the Silk Masks, 1912), and do one of the first public appearances in addition to film personalities (January 1912).
