Last March, I ran the Rome Marathon. One of my good friends from Germany, which had never been to Rome, accompanied me during my trip, which began in Milan and ended three days of the Eternal City.
Because I lived in Rome for over a year and went to the city several times in my life that most of a short trip to the Eternal City, especially for those who spend time in other parts of Italy and a few days to visit Rome. For I decided to take his suggestion.
The first is location. I would recommend a hotel near Piazza della Repubblica. There are a number of hotels in this area, ranging two to five stars. In addition, the low cost (1 euro each way by subway or bus) public transport in the region is impressive.
Piazza della Repubblica The area is a few steps from the central station (Stazione Termini) in Rome, two subway lines (A and B) are located. The station in this area is "Repubblica" which is online and allows easy access to the Vatican (Ottaviano), and the Spanish steps (Spagna), which also differs. If you you walk (5-10 minutes) or take the subway one stop from Termini, you can change to line B which leads to the Colosseum (Colosseo stop) and the Circus Maximus (Circo Massimo).
In addition to a key station, Piazza della Repubblica is an exceptional region, a district taking advantage of a system bus in Rome. The main artery leading to and from Piazza della Repubblica, Via Nazionale, where you can take any number of buses from Piazza Venezia (approximately 10 minutes). From the Piazza Venezia, then walk along the Via del Corso, which takes you to the fountain Trevi and the Pantheon. Just follow the crowds and the signs and will surely come to both!
If you're willing to walk a little more further, you can proceed to the Pantheon Piazza Navona, Largo Argentina and then to where you can take a bus (again there are many) which takes you back the Via Nazionale to Piazza della Repubblica area or climb to the tram and crossing the river to visit the beautiful and charming area of Trastevere.
As large cities, it is impossible to see and do in Rome has to offer in a relatively short time. But if your goal is to reach some Main attractions and sites, location and transportation, will be crucial for efficiently and quickly.
