The day is a celebration of independence and freedom. Cities across France celebrates the spirit of freedom and democracy, but the big events held in the capital, Paris, and it is a good time to plan your visit and participate in the celebrations.
Bastille Day commemorates the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille in 1789, a prison which held political rebels who were considered by King Louis 16th to be blatantly illegal and problematic.
At that time, France was ruled by a king and queen rich who did nothing to improve the lives of the poor, many of whom were starving in the streets. The middle class growing and increasingly resentful of the life of luxury to its leader was living, thanks to the heavy taxes imposed by the King, while France suffered enormous debt external and unstable financial future.
Through his writings and public meetings, these people asked for the rejection of the powerful monarchy and the establishment a free and democratic society, with leaders elected by the people. Has anyone seen to challenge the authority of the King was arrested and imprisoned in the Bastille. A large cache weapons are also stored in the prison, which is the perfect symbol of the power of the Kings and tyranny.
On 14 July 1789, a public demonstration of protesting the imprisonment of these prisoners and to reject the authority of the king gained momentum outside the prison walls. At least 1,000 people overpowered the guards and seize the building, burning to the ground. 98 attackers were killed and one guard to defend the prison. It was the beginning of the French Revolution. The middle class took to the streets, building barricades and combating the royal army, struggling to gain control over the king fled with his wife Versailles, leaving the control of the nation.
Soon after this event, the Declaration on the Rights of Man and Citizen was developed, highlighting equality of human freedoms, the rights to elect their own representatives to reject the oppression and communication freely, without fear of persecution. The country was later declared a republic, for the first time in 1792.
One year after the storming of the Bastille, there was a festival to commemorate the anniversary their destruction, and the French have continued to hold the time since. In 1880, the Bastille Day national holiday was declared officially under the banner of freedom, equality and fraternity ", the values are represented in the French flag," he Tricolor.
Although France was not open continuously from that time was values that these men were fighting for it remains symbolic for the people of France even today. Truly a cause for celebration!
Bastille Day, national holiday or as it is known to the French held over two days. Traditionally, the Paris fire stations open to the public between 9 pm on July 13 and 4 am on day 14, the music and dance, spill into the street for public enjoyment. It will publish a list of stations that open in the weeks before the event in local newspapers and small gifts usually collected on entry. All money raised goes to the Commonwealth Paris Fire Department.
The City of Paris, usually held an evening of dancing in the Place de la Bastille, on the original site of the prison. Each year chooses a theme, reflecting one of the nationalities, many of which France is today's citizens. In 2007, the theme was the music of Africa and the place was full of bongos and percussion instruments late into the night.
On the 14th at about 10: 30am a grand parade takes place on the Champs Elysees to the Arc Triunfo de la Place de la Concorde. People line the streets to watch the parade led by President of France, followed by police cadets, infantry and vehicle of the military. Military aircraft will accompany the parade from the air, streaming red, white and blue to represent the colors of the flag.
The parade lasts about 2 hours and is a great show to enjoy, but if large crowds and bands is not your thing, a great alternative is a visit to the Museum Lourve that is open free to the public on this day. It is an excellent opportunity to enjoy some of the worlds greatest art in the world's most famous art museum.
Later in the afternoon, Hippodrome de Longchamp is preparing for the only night of the year where horse racing is allowed at night. Gates open at 4 pm and races start at 5pm. The main race is held at 8 pm followed by dancing until late at night. For children, pony rides, a BBQ and fair with rides is in full swing all night. A great choice for families.
The most popular event of the day however, is generally the fireworks display takes place tonight. The main show starts from the Tower of Eiffle small screens, but usually come in around other parts of Paris, followed by the biggest parties and clubs until the wee hours of the morning.
Bastille Day is the only day in the year in which almost everyone in Paris, is free from work and school, to celebrate the democratic basis of their country, in a more spectacular. Everyone should enjoy at least one Bastille Days in Paris
