In the major cities of the world, there is an active underground economy and highly profitable consumer goods that generates false (in some estimates) more 500 million dollars a year. If you've ever been to "Counterfeit Alley" in downtown Manhattan, which has seen one of the most counterfeited markets in the world. While many of us spend our lust after waking hours the last fashion designs from our favorite designers, there are plenty of people there outside callers to purchase items outside or false, without fully appreciating the consequences.
I recently read a book called "Knockoff", written by a man named Tim Phillips. It was an insightful read, with a number of interesting ideas and often disturbing presented. I was particularly interested in the section devoted trade in counterfeit luxury goods, like designer handbags. These days, it seems that you can not go anywhere without seeing someone carrying a Prada or Gucci handbag fake. Personally, I have always resisted the temptation to buy a counterfeit bag. I avoided the temptation of all because such action only undermines an industry I've learned to love. When one considers the price of some of the portfolios of most effect, it should come as no surprise that some people purchase fakes.
What will surprise you is the discovery that their money is to support future terrorist attacks in the U.S. and abroad. This book has confirmed my belief in supporting legitimate companies. Any you ever stopped to think that the money you spend on fake consumer products ends up? This book will give you some ideas terrifying. The black market for consumer goods counterfeit provides incredible resources for criminal organizations and these organizations certainly do not have the public interest at heart.
One of the most disturbing ideas in the book was the suggestion that terrorist organizations, working with organized crime groups, using the profits from these illegal sales in support of future attacks. I could not sleep at night if I thought it was supporting terrorist campaigns to maim and kill innocent civilians in the United States, or anywhere else for that matter. I am a firm believer that a buyer of consciousness, and support companies that are trying to make the world a better place. Gladly to pay three times the price of a fake bag, to ensure that money is not supporting terrorism. Check out "Knockoff" when you have a chance. This is a true revelation.
