Changing quality control (or how to avoid looking like an idiot)
"Everybody needs an editor." ~ Ernest Hemingway
Papa Hemingway was honest enough to admit that it would not come out as one of the designers of the most distinctive prose People of the 20th century alone. Maxwell Perkins had. You have colleagues and even bosses and subordinates who can help them control quality and improve your business writing. More importantly, as yourself.
Remember: The fact that you have typed the last word does not mean it's over. Suppose you have several misspelled words below. Suppose you dropped the words like fingers flying over the keyboard. Suppose you fell in the "sentence fragment" and "Comma Splice" habits. Do not assume that the spellcheck is sufficient.
Here are some good examples of notes written to school by parents in Charleston, West Virginia:
"If Please excuse Gloria from Jim today. It is the administration. "
"My son is under the care of a physician and should not take PE today. Please run. "
"Please excuse Jimmy for being. It because of his father. "
"Sally will not be in school a week from Friday. We must attend his funeral.
See how you can check the spelling Let You Down? Keep this in mind that you are who signed the note and wrote the e-mail or report. This is called in the heavy editing – or novel – a piece of writing. And it's a terrible feeling of you and your business, organization or nonprofit.
Building a bridge to the press
If you've already seen one of these mornings Sunday, shows that the late Tim Russert and his question as experienced politicians and senior administration and foreign leaders called glib, you know pushing and fighting game. Having been a journalist in Washington (the national security correspondent for Business Week magazine), I can tell you the answer "No response" is almost as frustrating as it Gets – especially when we know that the public and the press is mean and aggressive. But there is a risk professional, and we must live with it.
What guests do is "bridge" for the importation of potentially embarrassing issue of transforming these "You want to leave in the minds of viewers. Powered by trickery, often manages to save more than half an hour without touching it and perhaps even seek Sharp and confident.
They come with a message. If you do not like the questions, which can provide transitional phrases such as:
– "The important thing to remember, however …"
– "It's a good point, but I think would be interested to know …"
– "Let me put things in perspective."
– "What does that mean it is …"
– "Yes, but this is not a fair comparison. We do things differently because …"
Put in place PowerPoint
Two things occur during the presentation in Power Point – the lights dim and the president loses visual contact with the public. Neither support your message, especially if you're constantly looking over his shoulder at the screen and in reference to his audience a slide dense (too many words in too small a space, or otherwise boring table) after another.
I recently spent three consecutive days seminar written seven Navy SEALs, one of the missions abroad, do personal work at the Naval Special Weapons Development Group in Virginia Beach Virginia For a man who crashed in Power Point to expect too much from the audience. "You see a power point and you are expected to competence ", a feature of training in the class who often sit through." But not enough. "
We have therefore worked on the training techniques without Power Point presentation. Each one practices the traditional skills of communication, research, listening the listener, like the rest of us have played the role of generals and admirals and ambassadors and foreign dignitaries in the world brief SEALs. They went to the whiteboard to highlight key points with a magic marker, hold the key contact throughout the hearing. They have learned to be concise and leave enough room to answer questions that any person skilled in the technical presentation is sure to inspire. In other words, they communicated.
Please visit my website at http://www.davegriffithscommunications.com , where you’ll find that I’ve worked with a variety of government, nonprofit and private-sector clients on business communication skills — from effective writing to presentation skills to media relations.
I travel widely to do writing skills training and media and presentation skills training for clients ranging from the U.S. Coast Guard to the Red Cross to the Department of Homeland Security to the Veterans Administration to the National Nuclear Security Administration to Navy SEALs to senior executives at a variety of federal agencies to businesses that need help with technical writing and written sales proposals.
