My best friend Karen and I were in the gym last week walking on adjacent treadmills and chatting. Karen was telling me about a man he saw at the gym the day before. "He was so handsome," he said. She then described her loose hair, piercing eyes and great body. "But then I saw …" He paused as he scowled. "… Carrying a backpack."
I laughed out loud. (A backpack, for those who do not know, is basically belt bag. It is often used by tourists, and is definitely seen as helpful on fashion.) Karen, who likes to call the police "fashion" immediately altered his high opinion of this otherwise perfect man.
So this made me think. What are we doing with our businesses, Though may seem small and unimportant, they may change the opinions of our potential customers, sometimes without even knowing it? Every part of your business must meet your professional image. Even a small detail overlooked can damage your reputation. Are you ignoring all aspects of your business? Are you wearing a backpack?
Then I listed the items of business that are often overlooked or neglected. Be sure to be careful with all these areas.
* Website
Is your website designed as an amateur? If you are not an expert in web design and hosting, find someone who is. A website professional is a necessity to compete in the market today.
* Answering Machine
If you can not answer the phone in person, has a professional sound recording and cheerful? People do not come back quickly?
* Receptionist / Greeter
There's nothing more irritating than being mistreated by a salesperson or receptionist. Do people in contact with prospects to match the desired image?
* Contracts
The fact that you've got a sale, your professionalism should not end. Their contracts must reflect the image of your company, or you may lose future sales or cause buyer's remorse.
* Portfolio
I was recently in a small cabinet / Accessory store when another customer asked the store owner to see your portfolio. The owner pulled out a stack of 4X6 photos from a desk drawer and spread on his messy desk. This is how she tries to design projects? Although his store was beautiful items, your "portfolio" (which shows a lack of pride in his work) was a backpack that perspective I'm sure he turned away.
* Your Appearance
What is your desired business image? Professional? Wild? Creative? Does your appearance match him? If not, the prospects who have difficulty getting beyond that, and they seem less credible.
Remember: If you are missing any area of your business, you can be sure that prospects will notice. Everything you put there should be as fabulous as you!
