If you like martinis then read and learn as much about the history of the martini and a tasty cocktail, Lemon Drop Martini fresco.
History Martini's
The Martini is a cocktail made with gin or vodka and dry vermouth, and is widely regarded as one of six major changes drinking a cocktail glass.
It is believed that the martini originated in Martinez, which is my hometown. Martinez is located on the south shore of the Strait of the Carquinez Francisco Bay Area, opposite the town of Benicia. It is the hometown New York Yankees baseball star Joe DiMaggio, and was the childhood home of Norv Turner, head coach of Washington Redskins football team.
If you go to the corner of the intersection of Avenue the Alhambra and Masonic Street, is a plaque commemorating the birth of the martini. The first known reference to the martini was invented in Martinez is located in the Bon Vivant companion: or how to mix drinks (1887 Edition), by "Professor" Jerry Thomas, a boy who worked at the head of many well known places, including the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco, California. According to George A. Zabriskie, he repeated the work original in 1928, Jerry Thomas had a client who took a ferry from the Occidental Hotel to Martinez, each morning. Thomas mixed him a "Martinez" to keep the morning chill outside, and named the drink after his client's destination.
The Lemon Drop Martini
One of my favorite versions martini is the Lemon Drop Martini. This drink is a sweet lemon-flavored beverage that became popular during the 1970s in California. Remember the lemon drop candies you used to go to movies when you were a kid? This drink became a favorite of the West Coast. Story suggests that this drink originated in a bar called Henry Africa's in San Francisco. It was an individual known bar and says to develop and "pushing the beverage girl. These are the drinks they become very sweet to cover the taste of alcohol.
Lemon Drop Martini Recipe
The Lemon Drop Martini became a favorite of my guests. Here's the recipe:
1 1 / 2 ounces vodka
1 / 2 ounce Triple Sec
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
3 / 4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice or bottled
Ice cubes
Wedge or Lemon Twist
To prepare glass, put it in the freezer until frozen. Then rub the rim of the glass with lemon and dip glass into sugar to create a super fine glass sugar rim.
Combine vodka, triple sec, sugar and lemon juice half a shaker filled with ice and shake well to mix. Pour strained liquid sugar in the martini glass and garnish with lemon mount.
Then enjoy! Remember to take care of them. They are really sweet, but Powerful! And remember, the next time you're in San Francisco Bay, passing a small town called Martinez, and see the birthplace of the martini.
