Elsie Allen Basket – a step backwards
One of the master weavers basket Pomo Native American tribe was Elsie Allen, author of a series of how-to books on the subject of the Pomo basket weaving. She worked to preserve this art form that defines its people and descendants of Elsie continue that legacy today.
Born in 1899, Elsie was raised by her grandmother in the Cloverdale area of northern California. She learned the art of Pomo basket weaving from her mother, Annie Burke, and her grandmother, Nelly Bustamante, and a number of other older Pomo women gathered at the family home. These women spent hours knitting these items, which were given away, sold, or kept as relics.
At the age of eleven, Elsie Allen was captured by government authorities, she was sent to boarding schools to learn the language English and American lifestyle. She continued her practice of traditional basketry while she was away to ensure that would not forget the techniques were taught to her by her family and people.
Elsie returned to her family as a young woman and took her knitting with family law where she had left. Once she was married, Elsie had to work a variety of jobs, such as a maid and a farm worker, who left her little time for practicing the art she loved. It was at this point that his mother Annie begins to train the children of Elsie in this ancient craft.
An interesting tradition among Pomo basket makers including the burial of their baskets and weaving equipment and tools with them when he died. Annie Elsie asked to ignore this tradition as she wanted her have one daughter when he could start his own basket weaving craft again. After the death of Annie, Elsie these valuable artifacts preserved and kept his promise his mother.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Elsie Allen organized the Pomo basketry and began to write books that describe the steps used in the manufacture of these extraordinary items. The money collected from his writings and the Weavers sold baskets was used to help families in danger Pomo, the creation of college scholarships Native American, and to finance a lawsuit on behalf of the Pomo tribe.
Elsie Allen also worked as a Pomo activist, fighting for recovery Native American land and struggling to establish equal rights for his people in a very biased California 1950. She also started to teach basket weaving Pomo anyone who wanted to learn, regardless of race. Like many of his students were white women, his own people began to criticize as a weakening of its form of life.
In 1972, Elsie wrote of his disappointment in his attempts to pass the Pomo basket weaving craft. Very few students at this point were the Native Americans, even attracted the attention of universities classes do not help the Pomo people to be accepted by the general population.
In 1980, Elsie Allen finally found an apprentice who could learn and pass on the art of Pomo basket weaving in the form of his great-niece, Susie Billy. This niece continues to teach Pomo basket weaving classes and has served as a collaborator on several books detailing the art form.
In 1990, after the death of Elsie Allen, collection of baskets and tools that belonged Annie Burke, as well as items that were added by Elsie passed to the eldest daughter of Elsie, Genevieve Allen Aguilar. Genevieve has placed this valuable collection of artifacts knob, in a long-term loan for the Mendocino County Museum, where works of these incredible women are still visible.
